Studies Show A-Fib and Heart Disease May Follow PTSD

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Risk for Early Incident Atrial Fibrillation: A Prospective Cohort Study of 1.1 Million Young Adults | Journal of the American Heart Association (ahajournals.org)

The conclusion of the study is the following, “PTSD is associated with an increased risk for early incident AF after adjustment for known AF risk factors and depression in this cohort of young and middle‐aged veterans.”

What this means is veterans who have PTSD as an established service-connected condition, can establish secondary service-condition for Atrial Fibrillation if they have that condition diagnosed.  That would mean an increase in their monthly disability compensation rates, as well as additional treatment for that condition at the VA medical facilities.

Veterans with PTSD who develop some type of heart condition afterwards should contact a County Veteran Service Officer, or other Veteran Service Officer to discuss the potential for adding those conditions as secondary service-connection.

Here is the VA’s PTSD Research Quarterly regarding all the studies related to PTSD and the development of Coronary Vascular Disease (CVD), as well as other heart conditions:
