Throughout the world, the poppy flower has come to symbolize those sacrifices, and USAA has created an exhibit to honor our fallen brothers and sisters accordingly. 645,000 poppies will make up a double-sided, clear wall stretching 133 feet long and 8 ½ feet tall on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this Memorial Day weekend — one for each of the 645,000 service men and women who have given their lives since World War I.
The poppy memorial will be located on the southwest side of the Reflecting Pool – with the Lincoln Memorial to the left, the Korean War Memorial to the south, the Reflecting Pool due north and the WWII Memorial to the East – and open for visitors from Thursday, May 25 through Sunday, May 27. It is hoped that in the future, the poppy memorial will continue to travel to important military memorials and ceremonies around the country.
In addition to the physical poppy memorial, people are encouraged to visit www.poppyinmemory.com where a virtual poppy wall will allow visitors to dedicate a virtual poppy in honor of loved ones.
