Russell B. Lemle, PhD, is an award-winning Senior Policy Analyst for the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute. His career exemplifies an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of veterans through evidence-based policy and dedicated advocacy. From 1981 to 2019, he worked for the San Francisco VA Health Care System, the last 27 years as Chief Psychologist. He’s authored numerous scientific publications and commentaries in a diverse range of outlets, including in Guns & Ammo Annual, Guns & Ammo Carry, California Firing Line, Task & Purpose, The Hill, The American Prospect, Washington Monthly, Federal Practitioner and American Psychologist on the adverse impact of the VA’s accelerated outsourcing of veterans’ health care into the private sector and the prevention of firearm suicide. Dr. Lemle has received numerous accolades, including lifetime achievement awards from the American Psychological Association, the Association of VA Psychologist Leaders (AVAPL) and the Disabled American Veterans. In 2017, the AVAPL Russell B. Lemle Leadership Award was established in his honor for those who advance veterans’ mental healthcare. He was a member of the Trump Presidency PREVENTS task force and has testified to Congress on veterans’ mental health and suicide prevention policy.

 

Suzanne Gordon is an award winning journalist and author who writes about healthcare delivery and health care systems and patient safety and nursing.  She is the co-founder of, and a Senior Policy Analyst at, the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute. Her latest book, Our Veterans: Winners, Losers, Friends and Enemies on the New Terrain of Veterans Affairs was published by Duke University Press in August of 2022. Her last book was Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health, Healing, and Hope to the Nation’s Veterans (Cornell University Press). She received the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Special Recognition Award for her work covering veterans’ healthcare. She is the author of Serving Those Who Have Served: Helping Rotarians Better Serve Veterans, which was produced by the Rotary Clubs of Napa and other Rotary Clubs.

Ms. Gordon’s other 20 books include, From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public; First Do Less Harm: Confronting Inconvenient Problems in Patient Safety and Beyond the Checklist: What Else Healthcare Can Learn from Aviation Safety and Teamwork. Ms. Gordon is the co-editor of the Culture and Politics of Healthcare Work Series at Cornell University Press.  She has been a radio commentator for US CBS Radio and National Public Radio’s Marketplace.  Her articles have appeared in Harper’s, The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The American Prospect, The Washington Monthly, The Nation, JAMA, The Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal and many others.

She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband.
