Happy Birthday America!
Camp Liberty, Jackson, Michigan
This week on Veterans Radio join host Dale Throneberry and his guests Camp Liberty Board Member Retired Air Force Major Richard (Rick) Briggs. Camp Liberty provides inclusive outdoor recreation programs that aid in the reintegration of U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families, with an emphasis on assisting those with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries.
Rick is with the Eisenhower Center’s “After the Impact” program. And as the nation prepares to celebrate its 241st Independence Day and honors the sacrifices that countless veterans have made abroad, it’s important to remain mindful of the challenges they continue to face post-deployment, namely the emotional and physical effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Veteran Services for Family Care Center
While an increasing number of veterans continue to return home from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, fireworks have become a prevalent “trigger” for many of them suffering from PTSD symptoms, causing flashbacks, panic attacks, and even violent outbursts.Veteran Duane K.L. France, Director of Veteran Services for Family Care Center, has provided years of service to post-911 combat veterans and their families. In addition to counseling, Duane also: Works with the National Board of Certified Counselors; specializes in research pertaining to trauma, stigma of mental health, depression, and post-deployment transition; and provides services to the Veterans Trauma Court since 2013.
In addition to discussing the respectful ways those celebrating July 4th with fireworks can remain mindful of veterans with PTSD to prevent “triggers,” he can also provide valuable advice for returning veterans suffering from PTSD regarding when and where they can seek outside help, and positive ways to deal with mental health stigmas.
And much much more including John Wayne’s What America Means To Us and Kate Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America”.
